   Have Your Say!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Roller Coaster of Moving Home

Wow, what an emotional roller coaster it has been. We have been trying to sell the family flat in Scotland for about two years. Finally, we are closing in a few weeks. I have been so busy cleaning and sorting out paperwork that I almost forgot to stop just for a moment and savour all of it.

This is the one place in the world where our kids will always remember growing up. The extensive grounds where bunnies ran freely, swimming in the freezing loch, watching our Guinea pigs munch on the fresh Scottish grass. This was their world, their playground. And this is the view from the lounge that will stay with me always. The sunrises and sunsets, the cycle of life.

We welcome new owners as the house celebrates its 150th anniversary. Another generation of children will love rolling down the hills and splashing in the loch. And we will see where the future leads. The promise of tomorrow sweetens the sadness of today.

Jenn Gillies, Kent

Dear Jenn

Thank you for writing in and telling us about your experiences of moving and selling your family flat in Scotland. That's a beautiful photograph.

We hope all went smoothly for you and wish you all the very best in your new home.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Blast From The Past - A Short Story

The ‘phone rang. There was an email and a text. They were all from the same woman. She wanted me to get in touch, wanted to meet up, to become part of my life: to see, to feel connected. No, this was not some female nutter, rather a long lost relative. Put another way, a distant cousin I had never met, who now, having surfaced, wanted to unearth and agitate my past.

Florence is into genealogy. Not in a small way either. She is an amateur but I bet she knows every clergyman in England, every graveyard and every register in the land. She must have spent a fortune on the relevant internet sites that require a fiver, a tenner or more, to investigate family trees.

Now, having allowed myself to be drawn into her projects, my phone never stops. At first, I would hide it under a tea-cosy, or switch off the ringing tone. But late into the night I would hear it ring in my head. Florence!

I should, I suppose, have told her to clear off, to go and bother another long lost relative. And I would have done, in a polite way of course, but for one thing. Florence is nice. Not nicey nice, but good, open hearted and generous nice. I like her. And how do you tell someone you like to clear off?

You have to admire her hell bent determination – a resolve to unearth long dead, long forgotten relatives by way of charts and trees. There was a distant Great Uncle Percy, who had twelve siblings. There was my great grandfather’s brother Alban, who opened an orphanage; and way back in the eighteenth century, a swashbuckling pirate who was hanged for mutiny. There were the illegitimate and the married, the good and the not so good; there were the poor and the rich, the long and the short-lived. All recorded, all set down, and all brought to my attention, by Florence.

So what if she did wear me down, drink my gin and eat half the contents of the fridge. Didn’t she deserve to? Without her, would I have bothered with ancestry and family trees? Of course not. I had shut the door on my past, and not because I had anything to hide, but simply because I was too lazy to care. My arm chair and Coronation Street beckoned nightly.

Florence has changed all that. I could go as far as to say that Florence has changed my life. I go all over the place now: dig up records, visit museums, pubs, old houses, streets and churches. My arches have dropped with so much walking. But I sleep like a log. I’m as thin as a rake, but I eat like a horse. A life filled with adventure and curiosity.

So if you are fed up with putting your feet up, become a detective, chase those ancestors and feel the thrill of capturing your past.

Jane Lockyer, Stanmore

Dear Jane

Thank you for sending in your fabulous short story. That's a real inspiration for catching up on your ancestors and taking up a new active interest.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

I love some of the colours that you can see in the garden in the Winter.

This beautiful tree full of red berries always cheers me up when I see it in my garden.

Sometimes I take my morning coffee outside and enjoy looking at the tree and listening to the birds. It's very relaxing.

Mary Collins, London

Dear Mary

What a lovely tree. I agree, it's lovely to look at the trees, colours and wildlife around us in the Winter.

We'd love to see pictures of other readers' gardens or places where you have seen beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

I think my cat, Sky is looking for something to eat!

Jane Whitaker, Margate

Dear Jane

That's a funny photograph. I wonder if Sky found what it was looking for in the cupboard?

We'd love to see other photographs of readers' pets.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

I came across this sign on a countryside dog walk.

Is this another result of Brexit?

Sheila Shepheard, Hove

Dear
Sheila

That's a strange sign. That does exclude a lot of cars though?

I'm surprised that other walkers weren't tempted to write a comment underneath.

That's definitely Brexit gone crazy!

        From Sue Ryder

This month we've got a brand new competition on the Sixtyplusurfers
Chat & Socialise page. We're giving away a gorgeous Velvet Sherpa Throw and a cute Reindeer Doorstop from Sue Ryder.

For your chance to win this fabulous prize, we're looking for the Best Winter Warmer Tip in the 'Winter Warmer Group' on the Sixtyplusurfers Chat & Socialise page.

Your Winter Warmer Handy Tip might be a recipe for a lovely warm soup, casserole, hot drink, delicious stew or a flambéed dessert. You can also include a photograph of the recipe.

It could be a money saving suggestion and a way to keep down your winter fuel bills and keep your home warmer at the same time.

It might be a crafty idea and could show other readers how to make a warm blanket, gloves, scarf or hat to keep lovely and warm.

Or it could be an idea for your pets, keeping them warm and cosy in a pet bed, with a blanket, soft toys and bedding. Or perhaps you've made your dog, cat, or garden wildlife a cosy pet coat or throw when they have been cold or injured. We'd love to hear your knitting or creative ideas.

It could be a fashion idea such as layering, clothing tips, places where you can buy warm clothes, ideas about leg warmers, boots and trousers that are comfortable and stylish. Have you knitted or made anything for a friend or family member?

It might be ways of helping other people in need such as neighbours, the homeless, elderly people, soup kitchens, care homes. Have you volunteered to help other people? Or can you advise on how Sixtyplusurfers readers can help others in need?

Perhaps you can advise on exercise, dancing, book clubs, board and card game groups, social clubs and other ways to keep happy and entertained in the cold weather with friends and family.

Win a Christmas Hamper from
First 4 Hampers

Win a Classic Christmas Hamper from First 4 Hampers

Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with First 4 Hampers to offer one lucky Sixtyplusurfers reader the chance to win The Classic Christmas Hamper’ worth £88.95.

Filled with everything for the perfect Christmas, First 4 Hampers’ Classic Christmas Hamper includes enough goodies for the whole family – if you want to share, of course. There’s not one but two bottles of delicious Waters Edge Wine, a Chocolate Yule Log, Mince Pies, Christmas Pudding and lots more.

Filled to the brim with enough food and drink to last you through Christmas, a hamper is the perfect festive gift.
They’re ideal present for that person who has everything, or when shopping for a group of friends or family.

Hampers also make light work of shopping, especially for anyone who struggles to get out onto the high street or simply would rather avoid the Christmas crowds. Simply order online and the hamper is all packaged up and ready to be delivered directly to the recipient’s door.

First 4 Hampers has a wide selection of hampers filled with delicious food, snacks, wine, beer or spirits. To help decide which hamper is perfect for you, we’ve created a handy list of top tips.

1. Who are you buying for?

Christmas Gift and Pannettone Gift Box from First 4 Hampers

It sounds obvious, but the recipient should always be the first thought when buying a hamper - everyone likes food and drink but not everyone will like the contents of every hamper.

The trick is to know what the recipient really likes and then find a hamper that matches these tastes. And, if buying for a group of recipients, such as a family, think about choosing a hamper that has something for everyone.

For that special someone who likes a spot of festive fizz, the
Christmas Fizz and Panettone Gift Box is ideal. It contains a bottle of delicious prosecco, a traditional fruit Panettone and a pack of Belgian Chocolates.

Yuletide Delights Gift Box from First 4 Hampers

For added luxury, perfect for two, try
The Yuletide Delights Gift Box containing a selection of treats for grownups only – or at least that’s what you can tell the grandkids!

Or, if you’re buying for a friend with more savoury tastes, The Beer and Savoury Snack Box may be perfect.

Or, if you’re buying for a friend with more savoury tastes,
The Beer and Savoury Snack Box may be perfect.

2. Remember, hampers don’t have to be food and drink only

Best in Show Wicker Dog Hamper

While food and drink hampers are the most popular, they’re not the only option. For anyone who’s potty about their pet, why not buy a present which can be enjoyed by both animal and human?

The
Best in Show Wicker Dog Hamper is the perfect way to say ‘I love you’ to a favourite four-legged friend. This delightful gift set contains everything for a cosy night in, including Popcorn for Dogs and even Woof Dog Beer - although the dog’s beer is non-alcoholic and beef-flavoured, meaning no tiddly terriers.

The hamper also contains a selection of grain free dog treats and wheat free dog treats including baked dental oaties and Best in Show’s very own Peanut Butter & Jelly biscuit bites.

Best in Show Cat Hamper

Or, if the hamper recipient is crazy about cats,
Best in Show's cat hamper is a purr-fect gift, packed to the brim with healthy and nutritious snacks and toys to keep your cat (and owner) entertained. The cat gift basket is full of natural, healthy and luxurious cat treats all delivered in an exclusive fish-shaped, handmade wicker basket. So, whether you're looking for a cat gift for him, a cat gift for her or the perfect cat Christmas gift, we've got you covered.

3. Check the delivery dates

First 4 Hampers Christmas Hamper

Don’t fall at the final hurdle! You’ve picked the perfect hamper and started your search early enough to ensure you find the perfect gift for Christmas, but will it get there on time?

It may sound obvious but failing to check delivery dates and times is a common error made by those ordering online.

Fortunately, First 4 Hampers offers free UK next day delivery on orders over £75. Phew!

As a special treat for Christmas we're offering one lucky reader the chance to win a First 4 Hampers Christmas Hamper

Mrs Suleman, Birmingham

Dear Mrs Suleman

What a fabulous photograph. You look like you are all having so much fun. How lovely that all ages can enjoy something new and have a chance to natter at the same time.

We are delighted to tell you that you are the winner of the Sixtyplusurfers Star Letter Competition.

The prize is a Guylian Deluxe Assortment Box of Chocolates. We hope you enjoy sharing them with your Nitter Natter group with a lovely pot of tea.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

My First Job with Happy Memories

One of your letter suggestions was telling you about our first job. That brought back a lot of memories.

I worked as a secretary for a music publishers in the West End of London. I was good at bluff and interviews and was taken on at the first one I went to.

I was not so hot on shorthand and typing. Luckily my first boss spoke slowly and I wrote fast, so after 'Dear Sir, thank you for your letter' I mainly got it down in longhand.

Touch typing seemed to have escaped me but I managed. However, when I was told to do some filing I had no idea of how to go about it and though in basic alphabetical order it was no more than that, so it was almost impossible to find anything. It grew into a horrible 'to do' pile which I ended up hiding on a shelf behind my desk.

My first boy friend worked in the shop attached to the publishers and my mind was more on this new excitement, meeting for illicit moments on the stairs up to my office and popping into the pub with him for lunch. All very reprehensible and the mature me is tut tutting.

I had very kind bosses and when my inadequacies were discovered I was moved to working the Gestetner machine and other more basic tasks.

After a year there I did them the favour of leaving and found a new job where I was the only person working in the office where, with no distractions, I managed surprising well.

Judith Hamilton, Essex

Dear Judith

Thank you for telling us about your first job. What a great story. It sounds like you did very well to get through it. I like the part about the illicit meetings on the stairs with your first boyfriend. It all sounded like great fun.

We'd love to hear about other readers' first jobs and the amusing things that happened to you.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Just a little funny from my grandson when he was 10 years old and we were both out in the garden tidying up.

After setting a couple of Apple trees, I asked him what he thought of setting a couple of Cherry Trees. To which he stood there in deep thought and then asked how long it would take to get cherries?

I explained about that it would take a couple of years to which he replied.

"Well granddad do you think it is really worth it at your age?"

What a gem!

Terrad

Dear Terrad

Thank you for sharing your funny story. Children can be very blunt and honest.

We'd love to hear from other readers about the amusing things their grandchildren have said.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

   Dear Sixtyplusurfers

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Lost in the Dark

Well If you were lost in the dark,
Could you find me?.
Forget all the demons behind me,
They're just imaginary thoughts.
Again and again you've been caught.
All the wrong lessons have been taught.
Don't you think it's time you should find me?
Cause I've been waiting here all this time.
And every chance you've ever had.
Still you deny me.
I've never turned my back on you.
Your darkness still has a hold on me.
I still sleep through the lies you believe are true.
It was always my gift to you.
To give the truth you so blindly disapprove.
But know I'll never leave you.
I can feel all the pain inside.
I can feel when you want to cry.
And your killing what you've got inside.
Know I'll never leave you,
even when you're body dies.
But when you come to realise,
it was you that you were trying to find.

I suffer from depression and have trouble sleeping so I write poetry during the night, it makes me feel much better.

Jane Whitaker, Margate

Dear Jane

Thank you for sharing your powerful and moving poem.

I'm so glad that writing makes you feel better.

We wish you all the very best and a Happy Christmas.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

  Thank you

Paul Potts on Stage

Thank you very much for my Paul Potts 'On Stage' CD which arrived this morning. What a fantastic selection of songs!

I am going to zip through the housework from now on with that playing loudly in the background.

Thanks again

Glynis O'Halloran, London

Please use our New Email address for Competitions

Don't forget to use the NEW Sixtyplusurfers email address for our competitions.

It is:
sixtypluscomp@hotmail.co.uk

You will notice that some competitions also have our sponsors' email addresses for entry - so do check each competition before you enter!

Please label all the competitions with the title given so that we can see which competition you are entering. Avoid putting the competition answer as the title of your email as this takes us more time to sort out your entry and can be confusing. And please ensure the competition title is spelled correctly!

And try not to leave the title of your email blank - as your entry may get lost in our Junk box!!! And then you will have less chance of winning a competition prize. Finally, please don't forget that each competition must be entered separately with the correct title as shown on the competition.

Closing date for this month's competitions is 31st December 2017 - so don't forget to enter.

If you live overseas, but would like to enter a UK competition on the Sixtyplusurfers website - please let us know if there is someone in the UK who can accept the prize on your behalf. Please let us know in good time if there is a change of address, you are moving house, going on holiday, or if you would like your prize to be delivered to a different address.

Please allow around 28 - 36 days for delivery of your prizes, as they are sent out by our competition sponsors rather than Sixtyplusurfers. But do let us know if you have any problems.

Don't Forget to Give Your Competition Entries a Title!

Don't forget to give your competition entries a title

Don't forget to label all Sixtyplusurfers competition entries with a title if you are entering by email!

All of our competition emails are automatically sorted according to their title, but if you leave your email
blank it may end up in the Junk Box!

The title of your competition entry for example might be
Damart Party Dress Competition. The correct title should always be included as the subject heading of your email to avoid it getting lost and help us enter you for the right competition.

And please enter each competition separately, including your full name, postal address and telephone number.

Let us know if you are moving or if your address has changed since entering our competitions

And let us know if you are moving or if your address has changed since entering the competition.

Win a Bottle of Feeney's Irish Cream Liqueur

This month, Sixtyplusurfers is offering two lucky readers who join the Sixtyplusurfers Newsletter mailing list or recommend a friend, the chance to win a bottle of Feeney's Irish Cream Liqueur, the perfect gift for this Christmas.

A Christmas drinks cabinet wouldn't be complete without an Irish cream liqueur. Feeney's Irish Cream Liqueur is a luxurious Irish Cream Liqueur, masterfully distilled and matured for at least three years in Abbeyleix, County Laios, Ireland. Made with barrel-aged, single malt Irish whiskey blended with milk chocolate and the finest quality Irish dairy cream, farmed fresh from cattle grazing in local pastures, Feeney's Irish Cream Liqueur is rich, smooth and deliciously creamy.

Feeney’s is made by Master Blender, John Drennan, who is continuing the legacy of Tom Feeney, who produced Irish Cream Liqueurs in County Laois for over 25 years. Today, imparting the same careful craftsmanship as Tom to create a cream liqueur of the utmost quality, John oversees the careful blending of the Irish whiskey and rich dairy cream at the distillery in Abbeyleix, ensuring the rich fresh cream taste for which Feeney’s is renowned. It takes 24 hours for the rich dairy cream to be delivered to the distillery from the dairy.

Feeney’s is an ideal after-dinner drink

At 17% ABV, Feeney’s is an ideal after-dinner drink, served over ice or neat, but is increasingly enjoyed by discerning drinkers in a variety of delicious easy-to-make cocktails, which can be found on their website.

An excellent Christmas cocktail would be Feeney's Espresso Martini

Feeney's Espresso Martini

Using a cocktail shaker, shake 50ml Feeney's, 25ml Espresso Coffee and 25ml Premium Vodka with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with three coffee beans.

Feeney’s Irish Cream Liqueur has won several international awards, including Double Gold and Silver at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was voted Platinum Best in Class at the SIP Consumer Taste Awards in the US. Feeney’s has just won the liqueurs category at The Irish Quality Food Awards.
