And Win a Sheaffer Calligraphy Set

Win a Sheaffer Calligraphy Set

Could your letter be the Sixtyplusurfers Star Letter? This month we've teamed up with Sheaffer to offer one lucky reader the chance to win an inspiring Calligraphy Pen Set.

It’s time to get creative with Sheaffer and put pen to paper on the new trend taking the world by storm. With the art form sweeping the nation, Sheaffer has launched its revamped Calligraphy Collection to encourage beginners and experienced penman and women alike.

Combining fresh new designs with head-turning coloured product, the collection will allow budding writers and creatives the chance to make a bold statement – wherever they are!

With a modern design and a unique shape, the Sheaffer Calligraphy range features three nibs sizes and eight different ink colours to ensure that artwork is different every time you put pen to paper.

The pens feature ‘Viewpoint’ technology which Sheaffer established in 1936, which allows the user to see how much ink they have left in their pen at any time.

In Sheaffer’s Maxi Calligraphy Set, you receive,20 ink refills and one of each of the three pens meaning that inspirational italics and experimental artwork never has to stop.

But if you’re new to calligraphy, there’s no need to worry! Each calligraphy set comes with a unique introductory booklet to start the journey towards intricate invitations, cool cards and stylish scrapbooks.

Each pen in the Maxi Calligraphy Set is also available as a single pen, to slowly build up your calligraphy collection and complete your artbox.

With both fine, medium and broad nibs available across the Calligraphy Collection, Arabic, Chinese and traditional writing styles can be created in a flash, ensuring a unique style each and every time.

Not only is the calligraphy set the perfect stationery partner, pink, teal and green pens make them the perfect accompaniment for style icons creating in coffee shops or designing in delis.

Nicola Shepherd, Global Marketing Director at Sheaffer is excited to launch the revamped Calligrahy range. She says, “Calligraphy has taken the world by storm and our range has been brightened up to reflect that.

“We’re hoping our new look range will encourage people to pick up a pen and get creative.”

Cooking Disasters

I read through your suggestions about what to write a letter to you about and you mentioned a ‘cooking disasters’. It made me smile and remember the following story.

Soon after we were married I thought I’d cook a Toad in the Hole for our dinner. Knowing that it consisted of sausages and batter I thought that must be easy to assemble, so what could go wrong?

I didn't have a recipe book and for some reason I decided that the batter should be thicker and of a larger quantity than when making Yorkshire Puddings, of which I might add, I could make very well!

Firstly I didn't par cook the sausages but added them to the thick mixture, and then put it in the oven. After checking 30 minutes later I couldn't believe that nothing much was happening.

I did this ‘checking’ every 20 minutes and after about 3 hours I decided to give up. What we ended up with was inedible very burnt Yorkshire Pudding, but ‘just’ okay cooked sausages.

I scooped the sausages out of the gloopy mess and we had sausages and beans for tea!

To this day I’ve never tried cooking Toad in the Hole again!

Bee Hunt, Kent

Dear Bee

What a funny story. It was lucky you were able to retrieve the sausages and at least have them with beans for tea.

Perhaps one day you will give Toad in the Hole another try - but with the help of a cookery book this time.

We'd love to hear about other readers' cooking disasters ... and your successes too!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

We'd love to hear from other readers about the things you have grown in your gardens.

Win a Vorwerk Kobold
      VC100 Handheld
      Vacuum Cleaner

Vorwerk Kobold VC100 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

This month we've got a brand new competition on the Sixtyplusurfers
Chat & Socialise page. We're giving away a fabulous Vorwerk Kobold VC100 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner.

For your chance to win, just tell us why you would like to win the prize in the 'Vorwerk Handheld Vacuum Cleaner' Group on the Sixtyplusurfers Chat & Socialise page.

For example you might like to win the Vorwerk Handheld Vacuum Cleaner'  because you find cleaning your house hard work and getting out a large vacuum cleaner to clean every little crumb is not convenient.

Perhaps you have guests staying or young children who create a lot of mess that needs constant tidying up.

Maybe you have pets and this would help with cat litter spills, mud brought in by the dog, leaves and soil that they bring in the house after a walk.

It could be that you have a bad back, or aches and pains and using a light handheld cleaner would help make cleaning easier for you.

Perhaps you work from home and your desk and laptop area get messy with biscuit and sandwich crumbs and this would keep you tidy and more efficient.

Maybe you are currently cleaning inefficiently with a broom, dustpan and brush and your house always looks untidy. Whatever your reason, we'd love to hear from you!

How to Enter the Competition

Win a Doro 6520 Mobile Phone together with a Year's Fuss Free Phone Service for Free

Together with a Year's Fuss Free Phone Service for Free

Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Fuss Free Phones to offer two lucky readers the chance to win an easy to use Doro 6520 Mobile Phone together with a year's free service from Fuss Free Phones to help you fight nuisance calls and protect you from spammers and scammers.

The telephonists at Fuss Free Phones take the fuss of using a mobile away. Just press the big button on the back of one of their easy to use Doro 6520 phones and you’ll be connected to someone who can put you through to friends, relatives or anyone you want. They can type out text messages and read you the reply or look up information on the internet. It’s just like an old fashioned telephone switch-board and it’s just a button press away.

Fuss Free Phones help you to fight nuisance calls and protect you from spammers and scammers

Research from Ofcom shows that people over 55 are significantly more likely to receive nuisance calls than those under that age, and the number of scam calls has increased significantly. When making nuisance calls, only 20% of companies give out their name, more than half withhold their number and 80% of people find the calls annoying, and nearly 10% find the technology is supposed to make life easier, but it doesn’t always work out like that. What if instead of using technology there was a person to help you?

Fuss Free Phones unique no-nuisance calls service uses a list of trusted callers to make sure that only the people you want to speak to can call you directly. All other calls to your Fuss Free Phone are routed to the telephonists who answer on your behalf and assess the callers, putting through those you want to speak to and hanging up on spam, scam and nuisance calls.

Fuss Free Phones is the only service which protects you from nuisance calls without you having to block withheld calls from people you may want to hear from such as your doctor or a friend. It’s also the only service where you don’t have to wrestle with technology.

Fuss Free Phones is the only service which protects you from nuisance calls without you having to block withheld calls from people you may want to hear from such as your doctor or a friend

Readers' Letters

Sixtyplusurfers Star Letter

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

This is my son Stevie who is aged 35. Although he is partially sighted and has had a kidney transplant (I donated mine), he still managed to take part in the London-Surrey Cycle Ride.

This was a 180 kilometres cycle ride through London. And here is a picture of him, showing off his medal.

I'm very proud of him.

Jane Whitaker, Margate

Dear Jane

That's fabulous, what a great achievement. You must be so proud of Stevie. What a lovely photograph to celebrate the day, with his medal.

What a wonderful thing to have donated a kidney to him. You are a very special mum!

We are delighted to let you know that you are the winner of this month's Star Letter Competition. Your prize is Lumie Bodyclock Starter.

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

  Lapland in a Log Cabin

This memory I would not forget
Going to Lapland in a log cabin,
With the fire burning bright,
Looking at the mountains glistening,
What a wonderful sight!

Seeing the streams not flowing covered in ice,
And seeing my children falling over not once but twice,
And as I leave the cabin I touch the icy prickling snow
And noticed my children’s faces all aglow,

Silver trunks of trees glowing at night
Snow covered landscapes very bright
Seeing the northern lights
The tranquil lights mark the passing of time.

I watched the skiing joy of the mountains outside,
Through a gleaming window cold as ice,
I guess life would never be the same
Having this memory of snow on an icy plane.

Linda Thorn, Leicestershire

Dear Linda

Thank you for sending in your beautiful poem.

You must have very special memories of your magical trip to Lapland.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

I have a seven year old grandson and he is quite a nervous boy. When we organised trips and events, he would be told what was happening and invariably would either not want to go or get upset when we got there.

On holiday in Orkney we met our relatives on the beach at Scapa Flow and they were sea kayaking. My grandson seeing his cousins having so much fun was offered a spare wetsuit and was soon paddling about the Flow having a whale of a time.

It soon dawned on us that he was being given too much information about his trips and was overthinking the events – because, he thought he was the only one taking part. Now we make it a surprise and he is a delight to watch enjoying the company of other children.

The sheer joy of being in a wild water like Scapa Flow is a memory we will all recall with so much affection.

John Mackie, Stonehaven

Dear John

Thank you for sharing your heart warming story. How lovely that your grandson was able to enjoy the Scapa Flow and be a part of all the fun.

That's a great idea to give your grandson surprise trips, to avoid him worrying. I'm sure his confidence will build up as he gets older.

We'd love to hear about other readers' grandchildren.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

At the beginning of August my wife and I were enjoying a week’s holiday in Torquay. As the buses there are so comfortable, usually double deckers, you get a nice view, and they go to all the interesting places such as Dartmouth, Totnes, Paignton and, Brixham. So we made full use of our bus passes.

That was until the middle of the week when the machine would not accept my wife’s bus pass. The driver rubbed it clean and tried again. Still no luck. Then we realised that it had gone out of date, the day before, and mine was the same. The date of expiry is printed quite clearly on the front of the bus pass, but as it is in constant use you never look at it, as ours last for 5 years.

So we had to buy 'go anywhere' tickets for the day which was still good value but not as good value as the bus passes. Please ask everybody to check their renewal date as they warn it can take up to 28 days.

That is the main point I wanted to get over, but there is a postscript. When we got home, the first thing we did was apply for the new passes and it does say allow 28 days. On the 28th day we still had not received them so my wife phoned the office enquiring where they were, only to be told we sent you a letter asking for a new photograph and you have not bothered to reply.

My wife asked, did you send my husband one separately? Yes, she said, and she quoted the right address. Well, she said he never had it either. Well she said on the screen it states the letter has been sent. Okay, my wife said we will start afresh – what details do you want? The lady replied, well it is all in the letter. But we have not had the letter. Anyway we did sort it out eventually and we had our passes within the week.

Jenny - Sixtyplusurfers is absolutely excellent You and your staff must put a lot of work into it. It is consistently good, up-to-date and has really practical articles. The competitions are good as well. All the very best. Keep up the good work

Geoff Bailey

Dear Geoff

Thank you for sharing your story about your bus passes and your warning to check the expiry dates. The whole process sounds very time consuming and frustrating. I'm so glad you were able to sort it out in the end.

Thank you so much also for your kind words about Sixtyplusurfers. We are so glad you are enjoying it.

Jenny Itzcovitz, Editor

  Dear Sixtyplusurfers

Open up your Heart

Open up your heart
What you have inside
Don't close the door behind
For your heart is true
Will reveal the real you
Don't hide it all away
There's someone out there for you
That feels the same way too
Beautiful in everyone and you don't close the door behind
There's treasures for you to find
Its all in you you'll find
Peace in heart will surely calm the mind
And no matter what darkness climbs
You'll find your place in time
Ever peaceful restful mind

Jane Whitaker, Margate

Dear Jane

Thank you for sending in inspirational poem.

We should all open our hearts and find the beauty in everyone and the world around us.

The Glen Moray Classic Gift Pack includes a bottle of Glen Moray Classic Single Malt Whisky and two branded Glen Moray tumblers

Glen Moray is celebrating 120 years of Whisky Distilling on Speyside this year.

Glen Moray is a quality Single Malt Whisky from Elgin, the capital of Speyside, Scotland’s most famous whisky region. The distillery has been producing fine malt whisky, distilled in traditional copper stills, on the banks of the River Lossie since 1897 and this year celebrate their 120th year.

The craft of producing this elegant and well-rounded Single Malt has been passed down from generation to generation ensuring a legacy of the Glen Moray Distillery continues. In its lifetime, the distillery has known only five distillery managers; the present Master Distiller being Graham Coull.

Glen Moray Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Whilst much has changed since distilling began, the ingredients have remained the same; ensuring Glen Moray has kept its authenticity and quality. Using ex-bourbon barrels from North America to mature the whiskies gives Glen Moray its rich and spicy characteristics. The casks deliver a high quality malt whisky that has a smooth and well-rounded taste.

The Glen Moray Classic range contains a number of expressions including Classic, Peated, Port Cask Finish and Sherry Cask Finish.

Glen Moray Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Glen Moray Classic is a classic Speyside single malt and forms the starting point for the range and offers excellent value and is an approachable whisky with butterscotch and shortbread on the nose and a lightly spiced mouthfeel with malty toffee notes and a lemongrass tang.

Glen Moray Classic is available from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Co-Op and Musgraves, price is from £20.00.

Why not indulge in a Glen Moray cocktail which is easy to make?

Recipe

1. Add ice to a glass and pour in 50ml Glen Moray Classic Single Malt Whisky

2. Top up the glass with sweetened Apple & Pear Green Tea

3. Garnish with a fanned pear

4. Add a dash of freshly squeezed lemon juice to taste.

Glen Moray Peated is a new expression and an unusual Speyside single malt, with peat smoke being used to dry the barley before distillation. The sweet vanilla flavours in the whisky combine with layers of peat smoke to deliver a whisky which is satisfying and long in finish.

Glen Moray Peated is available from Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Whisky Specialist Retailers, price from £25.00.

Glen Moray Port Cask Finish is a small batch release, combining the best of the soft gentle Glen Moray Classic Single Malt with the spicy, plum, wine-like, tannic elements from the port casks from Porto Cruz in which it is matured. One the nose, toasted vanilla and subtle oak is followed by rich dried fruit, along with subtle hints of dark chocolate and leather. This port cask finish has a  lemony tang to it which progresses into a caramel-like taste with dashes of cinnamon. Finally finishing with a honey sweetness combined with spices and dark chocolate.

Glen Moray Classic Port Cask Finish is available from Majestic, Spirited Wines and Whisky Specialist Retailers, price from £25.00.

Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish offers a new twist on the traditional Glen Moray taste-profile by adding layers of rich and spicy sweetness to the spirit’s typically light and floral flavours of butterscotch and lemongrass. Sherry Cask Finish is a celebration of the age old tradition of maturing whisky in the finest Oloroso sherry casks.

Glen Moray Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Graham Coull, Glen Moray Master Distiller comments, “I select Glen Moray which has been maturing in American oak casks and transfer it to the highest quality sherry casks for a minimum of 8 months. The resulting whisky is incredibly rich and satisfying”.

Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish is available from Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Whisky Specialist Retailers, price from £22.00.

We are pleased to offer the Glen Moray Classic Gift Pack as a prize for two lucky winners. The Gift Pack includes a bottle of Glen Moray Classic and two branded Glen Moray glasses and is only available to purchase at the Glen Moray Online Gift Shop.
