Pronto! Let's Cook Italian in 20 Minutes
By Gino D'Acampo
Review by Jenny Itzcovitz

Pronto! Let's Cook Italian in 20 Minutes by Gino D'Acampo

In the busy world we live in, it's difficult to find time for ourselves and even harder to find time to cook, but we still need to eat. Best selling TV chef, Gino D'Acampo is here to help with his simple shortcuts to cooking quick Italian meals with all the flavour and just a pinch of effort that will revolutionise your approach to cooking and save you lots of time.

At the heart of his cookbook is a lesson Gino learned from his grandfather: great chefs spend time finding the right ingredients; they don't waste time in the kitchen preparing them. Pronto! features a whole host of gorgeous Italian recipes, alongside handy tips on how to organise your kitchen, and which essentials to keep at hand. Gino has thought of everything you need for quick, tasty and affordable cooking, when you are tired and want food ... fast!

Packed with 130 delicious Italian favourites, Gino's recipes will help you ditch dissatisfying dinner fixes at the end of a busy day, as you gain confidence and speed in the kitchen. From lighter small plates and soups, to hearty Italian dishes, Pronto! offers fresh, exciting and creative meals, so you can reward yourself at the end of a long, hard day. In an ingenious twist for when you are least prepared, recipes are organised by ingredient, so you can easily find a dish to make using what you have in the cupboard or fridge.

Everybody is time-starved, but we all need to eat, so why not make it as enjoyable as possible? We all deserve a delicious dinner, so kick off those work shoes, pour yourself a glass of wine, take a leaf out of Gino's book and rustle up a veritable Italian feast, with the minimum of effort and the maximum of satisfaction.

I was really inspired by this warmly written cookery book by Gino D'Acampo. The book encourages you to use high quality ingredients so that you can create delicious home cooked Italian meals in the comfort of your own home.

The recipes are all easy and quick to make and the results are just like you would find in a good Italian restaurant. The book includes stunning photographs so that you can see the finished recipes and how to present them. Gino also includes stories of where the recipes come from and tips to help you enjoy them.

My favourite recipes are Speedy Vegetable and Cannellini Bean Soup, Chicken in Lemon and Parsley Sauce, Lamb Pitta Pockets with Mascarpone Dressing, Sliced Tuna Steak with Parsley, Lemon and Garlic Dressing, Summer Vegetable Tart, and Thin Pancakes with Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice. All absolutely delicious and easy to make.

This is a great book to encourage you to cook at home with fresh and healthy ingredients. Easy, quick and also perfect for entertaining. I would highly recommend it.

The Dog Walker

The Dog Walker by Lesley Thomson

The Dog Walker begins in January 1987. In the depths of winter, only joggers and dog walkers brave the Thames towpath after dark. Until a young woman, Helen Honeysett, sets off for a run from her riverside cottage and never comes home. Her body has never been found.

Twenty nine years later, Helen's husband is still searching for answers. He's asked Stella Darnell, the detective's daughter, and Jack, a tube driver, to find out what happened all those years ago. But the five households on that desolate stretch of towpath refuse to give up their secrets.

And as the winter tightens up its grip once more, Stella and Jack find themselves hunting for a killer whose trail has long gone cold...

I recently read 'The Detective's Secret' by Lesley Thomson, featuring Stella Darnell who runs a cleaning company, aptly named 'Clean Slate' who solves murders with the help of her friend Jack Harmon, her little poodle, Stanley, and some extra assistance from her mother, Suzie, the widow of a detective. I liked the characters so much I was keen to read anther book in the same series.

The Dog Walker features the same main characters, but this time they are asked to look into the disappearance of Helen Honeysett, a glamorous young jogger, who fails to return home from an evening run with her dog, Baxter. Blame falls on a kindly local plumber, Steven Lawson, who subsequently commits suicide.

I really enjoyed reading this nail biting detective story as Stella and Jack piece together the elements of this unsolved mystery. Stella as a cleaner is thorough and leaves no stone unturned, Jack is a gentle, superstitious man who follows his instincts. But both of them are in danger as the killer may still be on the loose.

Cleverly plotted with plenty of tension, drama, and warmly drawn characters, I took this book on holiday and was thoroughly entertained. I really enjoyed finding out about the different suspects who all had their own motives for murder, but seemed to have the perfect alibi. Everything was ingeniously resolved by the final page, although I must admit, I was completely taken by surprise. Brilliant!

The perfect book to curl up with on a quiet evening with a hot cup of cocoa. I look forward to reading some of the earlier books in the 'Clean Slate' Stella Darnell series which I haven't already tackled.

A Time of Love and Tartan
Alexander McCall Smith
Review by Jenny Itzcovitz

A Time of Love and Tartan by Alexander McCall Smith

Changes are afoot in Scotland Street in A Time of Love and Tartan. Small things can be of great consequence when a colossal embarrassment follows Pat Macgregor's ill-advised coffee with narcissistic ex-boyfriend Bruce.

If Matthew, her boss at the art gallery, hadn't wandered into his local bookshop and picked up a particular book at a particular time, he would never have knocked over his former English teacher or attracted the attention of the police.

Meanwhile, other characters in the world's longest running serial novel are moving onwards and upwards. Stuart's application for promotion and his wife Irene's decision to study for a PhD in Aberdeen mean alterations to life for the residents of fiction's favourite street. But as Stuart and Irene's son, Bertie, and his friends find out, sometimes change can lead to unexpected happiness too.

Alexander McCall Smith's delightfully witty, wise and sometimes surreal comedy spirals out to include bogus head-hunters from Papua New Guinea, an exchange visit from Rwandan forest people and the adventures of a class of seven-year-olds with Waiting for Godot. But its heart remains where it has always been - true to life, love and laughter in Edinburgh's New Town.

It's always a joy to read Alexander McCall Smith's gentle and charming books, so I was delighted to review the latest instalment in the 44 Scotland Street series, A Time of Love and Tartan.

In this latest ongoing saga set in Edinburgh, we find Stuart looking for promotion at work, but held back in his attempts due to political correctness and positive discrimination. Meanwhile Pat is drawn under the spell of the beautiful but incredibly vain Bruce. Will she be able to resist his charms?

Matthew, father of lively triplets, is spotted reading Fifty Shades of Grey in a book shop by his former English teacher. And Domenica, recently married to Angus is pondering whether married life suits her. Meanwhile, Cyril the friendly dog muses on the next leg that he might bite, and the people living all around him.

All this and more, is put under the spotlight in this warmly written book. Generously spiced with Alexander McCall Smith's unique dry humour. Curl up with a cup of hot chocolate and a large slice of cake and enjoy this sumptuous new book.

Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world's most prolific and popular authors. For many years he was a Professor of Medical Law, then, after the publication of his highly successful No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series, which has sold over 25 million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series translated into over 46 languages and become best sellers throughout the world.

These include the 44 Scotland Street novels, first published as a serial novel in the Scotsman, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the Von Igelfeld series and the Corduroy Mansions novels.

A Time of Love and Tartan is published by Polygon, an imprint of Birlinn. Price is £16.99 for the hardback.

A Life In The Day
By Hunter Davies
Review by
Simon Fine

A Life In The Day by Hunter Davies

In this much-anticipated sequel to The Co-op's Got Bananas, his memoir of growing up in post-war North of England, Hunter Davies now looks back across five decades of successful writing to reflect on his colourful memories of living in London during the height of the Swinging Sixties, becoming editor of Britain’s first colour magazine, writing the only authorised biography of The Beatles and documenting a year in the life of Tottenham Hotspur.

The 1960s were a remarkable decade of achievement for Hunter Davies. Joining the Sunday Times in 1961, he rose through the ranks to take charge of the Atticus column, transforming its traditional subject matter from ministers, bishops and ambassadors to the likes of Tom Stoppard, David Hockney and George Best.

In 1965 he also found time to write the novel Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush which became an iconic 1960s teenage film featuring the fabulous music of Spencer Davis and Traffic. At the same time his wife Margaret wrote the novel Georgy Girl which was also adapted into a successful 1966 film starring Lynn Redgrave as Georgy, with the theme tune sung by The Seekers.

This led to Hunter being given permission to write the official biography of the Beatles which gave him extensive access to the band and Brian Epstein. Hunter recalls his varied career as a writer both for newspapers and in book form. His books on The Lake District, football and many off-beat subjects remain popular to this day.

The later chapters of the book chronicle the illness and passing of his beloved wife Margaret after fifty five years of marriage. Their delightful relationship and the lives of their family is a constant theme of the wonderful autobiography. Margaret was better known as the much acclaimed, award winning author Margaret Forster.

In contrast to Hunter, Margaret positively shunned the limelight and had no interest in the company of the rich and famous, preferring her writing and the quiet life of their Lakeland retreat. As Hunter observed “I won the lottery in life when I met Margaret”.

Hunter Davies was at the heart of London culture in the Swing Sixties, becoming close friends with The Beatles, and especially Sir Paul McCartney. He has been writing bestselling books, as well as widely read columns for over fifty years. He lives in London and the Lake District and was married to the author Margaret Forster.

A Life In The Day is published by Simon & Schuster. Price is £16.99 for the hardback.

Buy, Keep, or Sell?
By Judith Miller
Review by Simon Fine

Buy, Keep, or Sell? by Judith Miller

Buying and selling collectibles has become a very popular hobby or, in some cases, business venture for many people. Television programmes such as Bargain Hunt, Flog It, Cash In The Attic and Antiques Roadshow have stimulated the interest of millions of viewers in collecting all sorts of objects either for practical use or display or to make a profit by buying at selling online or at auctions, markets or car boot sales. Written by antiques expert Judith Miller, Buy, Keep, or Sell? is an indispensable guide for those with an interest in modern collectables.

The book’s design makes it very easy to navigate. A handy introduction explains how to get started in the world of collectables, how to determine the value of items, where and how to buy and sell and how to avoid the pitfalls such as spotting a fake.

Judith also explains how the value of an item is affected by its condition, rarity, quality, size and provenance. This guide teaches you how to squeeze out those hidden gems with confidence and ensure you never lose money to a 'fake' again.

The main body of the book is divided into ten chapters each covering a segment of the collectables market. My favourite chapter was Toys, Dolls and Teddies which was a great nostalgia trip for me. Brands such as Corgi, Hornby, Dinky and Chad Valley took me back to my youth.

There were also features on model railways, marbles, puppets, everything associated with dolls and teddy bears plus lots of games. Another fascinating chapter spotlights the world of entertainment which has an ever changing range of collectibles relating to films, TV, sport and music. As you would expect, the book also features chapters on ceramics, historical memorabilia, glass, household objects and books and other written material.

What I particularly like about Buy, Keep or Sell? is the level of detail devoted to each chapter. At nearly 400 pages, there is a wealth of information. Particularly helpful are the top tips to guide you when considering whether to buy an item. Also the recommendations on what to buy, keep or sell, which is where Judith’s expert knowledge is especially welcome.

This invaluable antiques guide includes over 1,500 fabulous colour photographs to help you recognise valuable collectibles. Providing fascinating cultural and historical context for featured collectables, Buy, Keep, or Sell? is the ultimate user-friendly guide to sorting the treasure from the trash.

Judith Miller appears regularly on TV and radio. She is an expert on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and has co-hosted the popular BBC series The House Detectives, ITV’s Antiques Trail and Discovery’s It’s Your Bid.

She is a regular lecturer and contributor to numerous newspapers and magazines including the Financial Times, the Daily Telegraph, BBC Homes & Antiques and House & Garden.

Buy, Keep, or Sell? is published by DK. Price is £17.99 for the paperback.
